Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken word. Research shows that phonemic awareness skills are an early indicator of success or difficulty with later development of reading skills. Some strategies for developing phonemic awareness include recognizing words with the same beginning sound, isolating sounds in a word, creating new words by changing the beginning or ending sound, blending sounds together, and so on.
